What's a Paediatric Dentist?

Paediatric dentists are devoted to the oral health of children from their early childhood through their teen times. They have the experience and qualifications to take care of a child’s teeth, gums and mouth throughout the colourful stages of childhood. Children begin to get their baby teeth during the first 6 months of life. By the age of 6 to 7 years, they start to lose their first set of teeth, which ultimately are replaced by secondary, permanent teeth.
Without proper dental care, children can face possible oral decay and diseases that can cause occurrence of pain and complications. Early childhood dental caries — a rampant disease is 5 times more common in children than asthma and 7 times more common than hay fever.

What types of treatments do paediatric dentists give?

Paediatric dentists give comprehensive oral health care that includes the following

  • Child oral health examinations, which include risk assessment for caries in mother and child.
  • Preventative dental care including cleaning and fluoride treatments, as well as nutrition and diet recommendations. Habit breaking (for eg: tounge thrusting, thumb sucking etc..).
  • Early assessment and treatment of misaligned teeth and correcting an incorrect bite (orthodontics).
  • Detection of oral conditions associated with conditions similar as Diabetes, Congenital Heart Disease (CHD), Asthma, Hay Fever, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
  • Surgical treatment of gum conditions including ulcers, short frenum, mucoceles, and paediatric periodontal diseases.
  • Care for dental injuries (for eg: fractured, displaced, or knocked-out teeth).

Paediatric dentists — the complete care for children

Children are not always patient and cooperative during a dental examination. Paediatric dentists know how to examine and treat children in ways that make them comfortable. In addition, paediatric dentists use specific methods which are designed keeping the behaviour of children in mind. A paediatric dentist offers a wide range of treatment options, as well as training to watch for your child’s teeth, gums and mouth.
