Prophylactic Dental Cleaning

The word prophylaxis means “action taken to prevent a disease”. Thus, prophylactic dental cleanings are used to clean healthy teeth to prevent them from getting affected by tooth decay or any other diseases. Prophylactic dental cleanings aim at removing stains and calculus/tartar from the front, back, and sides of teeth using a dental scaler and a water spray.

Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing, also known as deep cleanings, are used on both the teeth and gum pockets to treat gingivitis and periodontitis. Deep cleanings for gingivitis are generally completed in a single dental appointment. Deep cleanings for periodontitis, on the other hand, may require multiple visits. Scaling not only does remove bacteria, but it also helps to reduce gum inflammation. Root planing is the process of smoothening the tooth roots, which helps the connective tissues to reattach to the teeth and eliminate gum pockets.

Conservative Periodontal Therapy

Periodontal conservation cleanings are also dental cleanings designed to treat gum diseases. Like; scaling and root planing, they remove redundant stains and tartar from the tooth surface and gum pockets and also smoothen out the roots if required.

Gross Debridement Therapy

Gross debridement cleanings are the most aggressive teeth cleanings designed to clean teeth with riotous quantities of stains and tartar. These cases generally include individuals that fail to maintain a good oral hygiene or who has avoided the dentist for a significant period of time. Since stains harden into tartar and large quantities of tartar are significantly hard, an electrical tool is used to loosen the tartar during gross debridement cleanings. Once the redundant stains and tartar have been removed, a prophylactic cleaning is performed to further clean the teeth.
